PAUL KING’S…LAST SUPPER?

Are we getting spoiled or what? Yet another CD offering from our hero, and a double CD at that?

Despite most of the tracks included in the package being familiar to me, it is of course fantastic to have them on compact disc in one collection. Trawling the archives of Paul’s career from 1973 to 1995, A New Day Records have really come up trumps (again) with tracks by P.RUFUS KING, RHODE ISLAND RED, NIGHTSHIFT, PALADIN, JIGILO JUG BAND, LEVI GUMBLE, P. KING and of course SKELETON CREW, the common denominator being…our Paul with help from musicians from the likes of – WINGS, FAMILY, SCORPIONS, MANFRED MANN… oh, and a band called MUNGO JERRY!

I never did manage to get hold of the original 45 of the LEVI GUMBLE single, ‘Round and Round’, though Joe Rush did tell me about it back in the 70’s - I thought he was winding me up - , but here at last it is!

‘Busker’s Dawn’ is simply amazing and was known to me in a previous life as, ‘Park Lane’. I particularly enjoyed ‘totally new songs’ such as, ‘Nobody Loves Me’ and ‘Go Back To School’ and the JIGILO JUG BAND tracks were in my view, very nice recordings, with two of them being included here – ‘Jigilo Stomp’ and the naughty, ‘Money For Rope’.

I can’t imagine that all fans of PAUL KING will be anything other than delighted with this 2 CD set, nicely packaged with some interesting pictures covering the time span, ’73-’95.

THE LAST SUPPER? I bloody well hope not!!!

Alan Taylor.

The extraordinary talents of this singer/songwriter never cease to amaze me. With his distinctive voice and characteristic style, he also has the ability to change his tone and depth according to the type of songs he sings and I believe ‘Last Supper?’ is his best ever.

This double CD is very diverse and there are quite a few songs I hadn’t heard before - from love songs and ballads like ‘Now You Know’, Never Be Sad’, and ‘No One To Phone’ to the jaunty “You Are The One” and the carnival sound of ‘Sailors Farewell’ and ‘Live For Today’.

Track 23 ‘Ain’t Superstitious’ is a bluesy number reminiscent of a young Bob Dylan, and of course, ‘Round and Round’ recorded under the name of Levi Gumble has the old jug band style. The Spanish/Spaghetti Western style of 'The Rain' is also one of my favourites and if you wait long enough, you will hear a surprise additional track at the end of the 2nd CD.

All of the songs on this CD are so catchy and memorable that you’ll find them running around in your head when you wake in the morning! Paul has a huge following as attested by the large crowd at the recent gig at the Phoenix in Staines in September, and I am quite certain that this brilliant CD will appeal to all.
